Chesney was born on 26 March 1968 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He has his father, David Chesney, his mother, Karen Chandler and his younger sister Jennifer Chandler in his family. Kenney’s father was an elementary school teacher while his mother was a hair stylist.

He went Gibbs High School and later went to East Tennessee State University for further studies. He was gifted a guitar on Christmas and this was the time he developed interest in music and learnt to play guitar. In 1989, he self-released a demo album and managed to sold 1000 copies. Meanwhile, he also performed in clubs and bars. With his earnings, he bought himself a new guitar.

After his graduation, he moved to Nashville where he performed in different local clubs and cafes including The Turf and The Bluebird Café. In May 2005, Kenney married Renée Zellweger.
